More Android telephones than any other time in recent memory are clandestinely tuning in for quiet sounds in advertisements

That represents a dramatic increase in the number of android apps known to use the creepy audio tracking scheme. Our case study on three commercial ultrasonic tracking technologies reveals that the outlined tracking mechanisms are not a theoretical threat, but actively deployed (e.g. That means phones that have the apps installed are silently listening for ultrasonic sounds without the knowledge or consent of their owners. Longer term, antivirus providers may be able to addfeatures that detect the tracking during routine scans of installed apps. Even if they're not actively used, the growth in apps signals the practice could become widespread in the near future.

Researchers discovered technology that lets devices talk to one another for tracking purposes using ultrasonic tones on 234 android apps. Hundreds of Android apps could be covertly tracking users via inaudible sounds emitted by nearby devices, researchers have found. "An adversary can monitor a user's local TV viewing habits, track their visited locations and deduce their other devices," said the researchers. This signals whether a person has engaged with an advert by watching it, or visited a shop, and how long for. Televisions, billboards, websites and shops can emit the high frequency sounds, which can't be heard by humans but are picked up by the apps.
