Enlarge Image FacebookFacebook has a tiny, speedy new messaging app designed for owners of older Android phones.Facebook Messenger Lite, announced Monday, takes up a much smaller amount of a phone's storage -- just 10 megabytes -- than the full-fat app that most users have installed on their phones, and it has been pared back so that it runs peppily over slower-than-average networks.It is the companion app to Facebook Lite, a stripped-down version of the social network, also for old Android phones, launched in 2015.

Facebook has just announced the immediate availability of a new version of its Messenger application for Android devices.Dubbed Messenger Lite, the application will be launched in emerging markets where communication is still a luxury.The main goal of Messenger Lite is to reduce the mobile data consumption, which is so expensive in some markets.According to Facebook, the Messenger Lite application will be initially launched in five countries: Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Venezuela.

Facebook has come out with a "lite" version of its Messenger app, in a bid to reach users in emerging markets where mobile internet connections are slow.In a blog post published Monday, the company described Facebook Messenger Lite as a "slimmed down version of Messenger" designed for basic Android phones with low memory.The app rolls out today to users in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Venezuela, before expanding to other markets in coming months.
